all that bad?

Alastair has a great post regarding the Crusades and it includes a thoughtful consideration of violence in various histories (Christian, Islamic, Secular). I'd really recommend giving it a read, as it is a subject that I've been unprepared to talk intelligently about when the opportunity came.

The history that we are taught is extremely biased and anti-Christian. And that is not only in public schools, but in Christian schools as well. There are so many amazingly wrong myths commonly propagated, like the Crusades, that people thought the earth was flat, the Dark Ages, etc.

I basically agree with T.S. Eliot regarding the Crusades: good ideas that went bad. It was essential that Christendom take up arms at that point in time, but it did it so poorly. It's not surprising there were so many attrocities. The article Alastair links to is great ("The Real History of the Crusades") and will give a really nice overview of the history. I think it's a little too kind to the Crusader's, though.
