Sausage Links

I know that there are a few readers out there who are concerned about my feeding habits. This post is to help them take that gentle concern they feel and wash it away in the rush of good eating which I'm about to disclose.

Here's what I had for tonight for dinner (which... 4 hours later I'm still feeling quite full from):

2 Eggs, fried/poached with olive oil. I can't really encourage the use of olive oil for this, because it adds too much 'olive oil' flavor to the eggs. Blegh. Salted with Sea Salt, and Peppered with Freshly Ground Pepper.

A bowl of Shin Ramyun Noodles. (Korean "gourmet" instant noodles). -These are very tasty-delic and are even better when mixed with fresh spinach and/or kimchi! I also like to finely dice a few cloves of garlic to add to the mix. Yes, that's a few cloves for just one bowl. Sometimes I just stink, and that's alright with my line of work.

A teaspoon of Codliver Oil. (not so tasty at all!)
A Trader Joe's Men's Multi-Vitamin.

/what I had for dinner.

So, that's not so bad, eh? As for the rest of the meals during the week, I have Korean Noodles about four times a week. Tuesdays and Thursdays I generally eat lunch somewhere with Phil. M-W&F I don't always eat a lunch, but if I'm hungry I manage to grab one either from the Uni's Deli or I make some eggs at home. Breakfast... I don't eat, unless I have an appointment to eat breakfast with someone (as has been the case twice this week).

The Codliver Oil is going to be a regular daily treatment. As will the TJ's Masculin Vitamins.
I've a rice cooker as well, and it is great to have! I've made a lot of rice this past two weeks, and it makes a great carb addition to the noodles in the evening.

For those of you readers who notice I haven't posted a picture in a while... I left my camera up in Ventura. My mobile just doesn't take good enough pictures, so I'm letting it rest for a bit.

I woke up early yesterday and saw the sunrise. It wasn't very remarkable. Here's a picture of it's unremarkable-ness:

I forgot to mention that I eat very well on the Weekends!

I could probably do with more greens, but I tend to focus more on what shouldn't be eaten than what should be. So.. I rarely drink Soda, eat high-sugar things.. etc.

I could also do with a bit more meat, so every month or so I go meat shopping for Salmon and Steaks which I stock the fridge with.. and eat when I have time to prepare it.

That gentle concern is pretty stubborn.

I love Shin Ramyun, and usually add dropped egg into the mix. But... as much as I love it, it is not exactly healthy fare. It is still starchy ramyun with all the extras that end up in soup mixes. Hardly a good staple.

Eggs are good, but do not provide all the needed proteins for a rigorous Parkour practitioner such as yourself. The addition of a regular portion of legumes, nuts and meat will keep those muscles primed and ready for any leap, or fall.

Codliver oil is a wonderful supplement to a healthy diet, but again is no replacement for the variety of "good" fats that your body needs from various sources. I would say the same for any multi-vitamin; all the required nutrients can be obtained through regular balanced eating habits.

Now, carbs are important, especially for an active young person such as you, but... It should probably still be less than 50% of your regular diet, and should be from whole grains as much as possible. Both rice and noodles are refined, and do not provide the needed fiber to keep those movements regular.

There you have it, my layman's nutritional advice, and brotherly concern for your longevity and well being.

With all that good brotherly, no need for motherly... :-)

I was afraid to comment for fear of sounding too motherly! But since Daniel started it...

I would probably have a hard time eating healthy if it wasn't part of my job to think about it every day. My first thought was that you could use a lot more fruits and veggies. As a parent I am always trying to figure out ways to get my kids to eat more of them. I try to always keep a bag of apples in the fridge. They are portable, and last a long time if you forget that they are in there ;-) Bananas, pears, peaches, nectarines, and that sort of fruit are all very handy for grabbing on your way out the door. Baby carrots are also very portable. Bagged salads would be easy at home, and I like to buy fresh prewashed spinach to eat like a salad. The kids love it too! You can eat some of this stuff before you fill up on carbs. One of my personal favorites is orange juice (with added calcium) since I am not as big of a dairy drinker as Daniel and the kids!

I have also nearly overcome my addiction to salt and vinegar chips by eating a lot of nuts. Salted cashew nuts are my favorite! I always wonder if that is from my childhood when we would wander into the hills behind our house in the Philippines and pick cashew fruit from the abandoned orchard and bring back the nuts for some of the Bible School students to roast up. Nice! Trader Joe's has great prices on nuts, which reminds me that I need to make a trip very soon!

In the Philippines when it was really hard to make a good salad from scratch (everything needed to be washed, cut, and mixed when it was already half wilted and then it would never last more than half of a day in the 90 degree weather) I would try to get a good salad or veggie dish whenever I was out to eat at a restaurant. It was a great time to get something that was too much of a pain to prepare at home for myself. It sounds like you already do that on the weekends.

Anyway, sorry! You got me started! As you can tell, we love to think and talk about food. My latest craze has been southern style greens. I will make you some when you come to visit! I think it is the touch of vinegar that makes it such great comfort food for me during this cold weather. Along with the fact that it reminds me a bit of Laing.

...okay, I will stop now. We can chat more later.

Hey Luke, I'm glad that you are eating so well! Gosh if you were to stop by Ariana's maybe you could feast alongside Amelia! Her diet is a good example of variety. =0)
