Jack Johnson

The News

A billion people died on the news tonight
But not so many cried at the terrible sight
Well mama said
It's just make believe
You can't believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight

Who's the one to decide that it would be alright
To put the music behind the news tonight
Well mama said
You can't believe everything you hear
The diagetic world is so unclear
So baby close your ears
On the news tonight
On the news tonight

The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight
And mama said

We used to read a fairy tale to our children
Send them off to dream with a conversation
Now we just switch on the television
How they gonna learn to love with no imagination
Send them off to dream with too much information
They're gonna learn to love with no imagination

Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die?
At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes
Mama said
It's just make believe
You cant believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight

We really enjoy the loose, light, yet forward style of Jack Johnson, and lately I find myself only humming "Where did all the good people go"

"Turn on the boob-tube
I'm in the mood to obey.
Lead me astray..."

"Station to station
Desensitizing the nation."

Very thought provoking and powerful poem. Have you ever read 'amusing ourselves to death'? That goes into issues such as how news broadcasts can numb you to thinking seriously about serious issues. It leaves you in the position where you are powerless to do anything about it and it is just turned into a form of entertainment. I'd recomend it
