chem shock!

Well, today was my first time getting poop out of our university pool. After removing it, we give the pool a VERY strong dose of chlorine to purge it of all nastiness. So the pool is all clean now.

Some of you might remember me posting a long while back about filling batteries and such. Well, I've filled them again and this time with little to no apprehension. Thanks again for all of the advice and recommendations that you made!

Running is going well. We haven't yet made it to the 2 mile mark yet, but we do run fast, so the distance is excusably small (so far).

Beautiful cloudy weather.

There haven't been any sunspots for QUITE a long time.. this may be a record for 'quietness' on the sun. There MAY be a spot on the far side of the sun, but if there is one, it's very small. Solar minimum they call it.

Here's a good song by Delirious:

What can I do with my obsession?
With the things I cannot see
Is there madness in my being?
Is it wind that blows the trees?
Sometimes you're further than the moon
Sometimes you're closer than my skin
And you surround me like a winter fog
You've come and burned me with a kiss

And my heart burns for you
And my heart burns

And I'm so filthy with my sin
I carry pride like a disease
You know I'm stubborn God and I'm longing
to be close
You burn me deeper than I know
I feel lonely without hope
I feel desperate without vision
You wrap around me like a winter coat
You come and free me like a bird

And my heart burns for you
And my heart burns for you

Sooo...Why is it your job to get poop out of the pool? Just wondering.

a very good and proper question. aaaand one that I don't have a clear answer to.

we handle the pool chemical levels and such, so that part does make sense. there IS a guy who is in charge of the pool, but I honestly don't know what all he does. maybe he schedules lifeguards, and disciplinary actions for kids who are running too close to the edge. i dunno. So... I don't know why it is my job, but it's not my place to ask 'why', eh? (c:

Ack! And maybe some disciplinary action for the kids who poop in the pool...? That really is a surprising aspect of your job in the power plant...

heh. funny you should say that mom. I'm under the general impression that it was not a child who left the poop in the pool.

But.. really, i think by the size of what was found, it seemed like.. not from a child.

Oh, now that is really gross gross. I really think swim team members should be a little more AR.

I used to be a lifeguard, and did that particular job for about 6 years of my youthful life. I loved it about 99% of the time, the 1% being all the times I had to scoop poop out of the pool.

We'd also have to chem shock it, and then in some of the pools I worked at we'd then have to also replace the chlorine tablets in the main pump so that the whole pool would continue to be clear. We'd have to wear an industrial/military-type gas mask and giant rubber gloves when handling those tablets. I'm not sure if its something minors without proper hazmat training should be doing, especially when their only wearing a Speedo bathing suit. The things we do for a buck or two in high school... :)

The guy in charge of the pool ( if you're talking about Steve) is Aquatics manager. He's a manager. His job is to use the pool in a profitable way for the university. Thus, he works in my department (Auxiliary Services: our job is to bring in non-tuition income). I've asked him how he makes money before: the idea is to get people from the surrounding community to use the pool for swim lessons, youth swims, etc.

Because Luke works in Facilities Services, Steve can pay Facilities using a work order system to do maintenance on the pool. The Power Plant guys include HVAC: since HVAC deals with toxic chemicals, someone in Facilities management probably made the decision to deligate it to you guys to maintain and then clean the pool.

That might help answer Ariana's question.
