credulous simplicity???!!

I'm listening this moment to the musical "The Pirates of Penzance" and I have to say that it really is one of my most absolute favorite musics. It's just SO funny. I'll write various lines from it in the following weeks.

What helps is that I grew up with the movie with Linda Rondstat (sp?) in it and that was fantastically acted, sung, and very fun. So when I hear the music I can actually picture every part of the movie. (c:

Current song, "they seek a penalty 50-fold for General Stanley's story.."
_____________________________________________________
Context for the below: After the song of "it really doesn't matter" which is sung after Fredrick is told that he is still bound to being an apprentice pirate for ~100 more years as a result of being born on leap-year Feb. 29.

Fredrick: Oh, horror!

Ruth & King: What's the matter?

Frederic: Ought I to tell you? No, no, I cannot do it; and yet, as one of your band –

King: Speak out, I charge you by thatsenseofconscientiousnesstowhichwehaveneveryetappealedinvain.

Frederic: General Stanley.... the father of my Mabel –

Ruth & King: Yes, yes!

Frederic: He escaped from you on the plea that he was an orphan?

King: HE DID?!! Oh yes. Yes, he did.

Frederic: Oh how it breaks my heart to betray the honoured father of the girl I adore... [King: Break it!] but as your apprentice I have no alternative.
It is my duty to tell you that General Stanley, [Ruth and King. Yes?] Father of my Mabel [Ruth and King: Yes, yes]. General Stanley... General Stanley is no "o"... ORPHAN!

Ruth & King: [in full rage] What?!!

Frederic: And more than that... .... ... [full agony of betrayal] he never was one!

King: [after a bout of dizzying anger and shock, a clearing of the mind..] Do you mean to say.. do you mean to say that to save his contemptible life! he dared to practice on our credulous simplicity? (FREDERIC nods as he weeps.) Our revenge shall be swift annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd....... terrible. We will go and collect our band and attack Tremorden Castle this very night.

Frederic: But stay –
King: Not a word! He is doomed!

to be honest, i actually had to look for the script online and copy and pasted from it, but I did make certain modifications to reflect my memory of the movie.
yeup, much fun! "credulous simplicity" is one of those great lines. (c:

sometimes I think I should have pursued music to play the role of fredrick.
